Summary of the technologies presented at the TEDx Amsterdam 2009

Hi everybody,
I try to post the following for some time now and hopefully I will succeed tonight.

The 20th of November, I watched the TEDx Amsterdam on livestream thanks to wired.co.uk
Here is my summary about the technologies presented, check the links if you have not heard of them before because the trend in digital and mobile is there.

1. Who’s who iPhone App made by Frog design specially for the TEDx event (look at the bottom of the page) for Networking and Matchmaking.

It showed all the attendees to TEDx Amsterdam in 3 categories: Everyone (all attendees), My Matches (suggestions on who you should meet based on your own profile created during the registration process) and Speakers.
Each attendee had a unique number assigned to their badge and there was a booth where your photo was taken and added to the system. It was a useful tool to explore who the other delegates were and find them through their photos taken during the same day.

2. Layar has more and more layers // 3D capabilities
Augmented reality applications by layar that allows you for instance to see the flats for sale from your exact location (via Funda) or to find shops and services. But it is much more now. Tourist info is one of those that they presented.
Layar also talked about the addition of 3D capabilities to its augmented reality browser platform. It allows tagging real-life objects with 3D text, place 3D objects in real-world space.

About mobile advertising for the one interested, Google recently bought a company called AdMob, pioneer in advertising on mobile phone.

3. MTV: storytelling and a celebrities monitoring tool
Tony DiSanto was speaking about the evolution of storytelling. To summarize he said that made-at-home-style-movies appear more authentic and appealing to the public than traditional studio productions……….
The app developed with Radian6 for the MTV Music Award is very visual. Remember the interruption of Taylor Swift’s speech by Kanye West? The tweets were monitored and it is a good example to show you what has happened.

4. Yellowbird Interactive streaming of 3-D content.
It is a variant for events of the Google Streetview technology. This was shown throughout the whole TEDx conference. It has also been used during a musical festival.
If you did not hear of it follow the link.

5. 3DRange / animated point cloud
3D range cameras produce thousands of distance measures in one picture, and produce up to 100 pictures per second. The result is an animated point cloud, where the shape of the filmed object (e.g. a person) is easily recognized. Normally, these point clouds are used for measuring deformations of tunnels, analyzing structures of trees or simulating flood planes. It is also used in robotics for robots to detect objects in their environment.
(Alexander Bucksch, Researcher@Delft University of Technology
Daniel Berio, designer, Insidia, real-time 3D games)
This technology has been used for their visual effects in the clip of Radiohead

It is a Brain-Computer Interface to the multiplayer online game. aWoW is a demonstration of how you can control a character in the virtual environment just by using your brain.
